The SAILS approach

A framework for navigating change.

SAILS provides a memorable structure for honest reflection, practical action, and long-term growth.

S

Self-Awareness

Build an honest view of patterns, triggers, thoughts, emotions, values, strengths, and consequences.

A

Acceptance

Recognize what is true now, release the struggle with what cannot be changed, and choose your next action.

I

Integrity

Close the distance between what matters to you and how you live, especially when no one is watching.

L

Life Skills

Practice urge management, emotional regulation, communication, boundaries, planning, and healthy routines.

S

Service

Use lived experience to encourage others while protecting your own boundaries and continued growth.

SAILS is a guide—not a test

People may move between stages, revisit earlier work, or focus on several principles at the same time. The framework is designed to create direction, not judgment.

Personal agency stays central

Members decide which tools are useful, which goals matter, and what additional professional or community support belongs in their recovery plan.
